꼬마 거미 당당이는 8개의 다리 중 하나가 짧습니다. 다른 거미들과는 다르지요. 어딘가 한 부분이 불편한 거미입니다. 그래서 당당이가 집을 만들어야 할 때가 왔을 때, 할머니와 할아버지 그리고 이모와 형 모두가 와서 도와주려고 합니다. 하지만 당당이는 혼자서도 할 수 있어요. 이미 자신의 집을 어떻게 만들지 계획도 다 세워 놓았고, 벌써 만들기를 시작했는데, 어른들은 그런 부분들은 봐주지 않고 당당이가 힘들 것이라 생각하고 도움을 주려고만 합니다.

책을 읽고 나면 아이는 많은 생각을 하게 됩니다. "꼬마 거미의 엄마, 아빠는 왜 없는 것이야?" 라며 아이는 질문을 합니다.그것은 거미의 특성을 잘 성명해 주어야 합니다. 아이에게 "거미는 짝짓기 이후에 엄마가 아빠를 잡아 먹는단다. 그리고 엄마는 앞으로 태어날 아기들을 위해서 자신의 몸을 희생해서 아기들의 먹이가 된단다." 하지만 이책에서 전달하는 내용은 우리가 아이를 바라볼때, 혼자 할 수 없다는것을 생각하기 보단, 아이가 어디까지 할 수 있을까를 생각하면서 아이의 행동을 봐주어야 한다는 것입니다. 그리고 스스로 할 수 있는 아이에겐 칭찬을 하는 것을 잊지 말아야 합니다.
